Early Photographic Processes

Anthotypes: This process is good for photograms. In this process, sensitizer and pigment are made from organic extract such as juices from fruits, plants, flowers, and vegetables. These are made by dipping or brushing the organic extract on the canvas, desired objects are placed on the canvas, and it is laid out in the sun for a few days or even weeks.

Some early work from artists who worked with anthotypes are:
Sir John Herchel
Sir John Herchel
Sir William Herschel

Some contemporary artists that use this technique are:
Christine Elfman
John Opera

Cyanotypes: This process is pretty safe and inexpensive. It's good for beginners and you can often find kits to do it. You also don't need a darkroom to do it! The process takes sensitizing solution, rag paper or cloth, a transparency or items (stuff to put on the paper), and a piece of glass.

Some early work from artists who worked with cyanotypes are:
Anna Atkins
